Bowling buddies from Hartlepool scoop £344.000

Nine members of a lottery syndicate from Hartlepool have been bowled over after discovering they managed to win a £343.643 lotto prize. Each one of “The League Bowlers”, as they call themselves, pocketed over £38.000.

The lucky winners are Philip Quinn, club steward at Mill House Bowls Club in Hartlepool, his wife Ann and another seven keen amateur bowlers who play for the club. They’ve been part of the lotto syndicate since 1994, and were over the moon to discover their patience finally paid off.
“I couldn’t believe it! As soon as it was confirmed, I called everyone to let them know. Some of the lads were that shocked by the news that they had to take the rest of the day off!” said the syndicate leader Mr. Quinn.
He was the one who checked the numbers online and rang Camelot to confirm the win, while his wife made sure the ticket is safe at all times.
“As you can imagine, we were very protective of the actual ticket. I don’t think we slept, we were worrying we’d lose it! Ann kept it under her pillow the whole time,” recalled Mr. Quinn.
The list of winners also includes Joanne Lightowler, Mark Squirrel, John Wells, Michael Broome, Reggie Cuthbert-Smith, Colin Facchini and John Brown. They didn’t share any definite plans for the future, but will mostly use their winnings to travel.
“What we’re most looking forward to though is the financial freedom. The win won’t change any of us – we’re all still going to stay in work, stay bowling and stay playing the lottery every week – but without any financial stress hanging over our heads,” explained Mr. Quinn.
